If you've scuffed a bumper, found a scratch down a door or picked up a dent in a car park, someone has probably told you to "get a SMART repair". It's one of the most useful services a driver can know about, but it's not always explained clearly. This guide covers what SMART repair is, what it can fix, how the process works and when it isn't the right choice.
What SMART stands for
SMART stands for Small to Medium Area Repair Technology. It describes a way of repairing cosmetic damage that focuses only on the damaged area, rather than repainting a whole panel or replacing parts.
A traditional body shop repair usually means taking the car off the road, stripping or replacing the damaged part and respraying the whole panel, sometimes the neighbouring panels too, so the colour blends. SMART repair takes the opposite approach: the damage is repaired, colour matched and blended into your car's existing paint, and the rest of the panel keeps its original factory finish.
What SMART repair can fix
SMART repair is designed for the everyday cosmetic damage most cars pick up over time, including:
- Bumper scuffs and small splits from kerbs, posts and tight parking spaces
- Scratches and key marks on doors, wings and bumpers
- Small to medium dents, including door dings and creases
- Stone chips on bonnets, bumpers and sills
- Kerbed alloy wheels
- Interior damage such as worn leather seats, steering wheels and scuffed trim
- Cloudy headlights and small windscreen chips
As a rough rule of thumb, damage that fits within an area about the size of an A4 sheet of paper is usually a good candidate. Larger damage can sometimes still be repaired this way, so it's always worth sending photos and asking.
How a SMART repair works, step by step
Every job is different, but a typical paint repair follows the same stages:
- Assess and clean. The area is washed and degreased so nothing contaminates the repair.
- Prepare. The damage is sanded and the edges feathered so the repair sits flush with the surrounding paint.
- Repair. Deep scratches and gouges are filled, dents are pulled or pushed out and plastic bumpers are repaired with flexible materials that move with the bumper.
- Prime. Primer seals the repair and gives the colour coat something to bond to.
- Colour match. Paint is mixed to your car's paint code, then checked and adjusted against the car itself, because the same colour can vary slightly between cars and fades over time.
- Paint and blend. The colour is applied and faded out into the surrounding paint, then lacquered so the finish matches.
- Cure and polish. The paint is cured, then polished so the gloss matches the rest of the panel.
