How to photograph car damage for a fast, accurate quote

One of the easiest things about SMART repair is getting a price. There's usually no need for anyone to come out and look first. A few good photos are enough for an accurate quote. The better the photos, the more accurate the price, so here's exactly what to send.

The photos we need

1. A close-up, straight on. Stand directly in front of the damage and fill most of the frame with it. This shows the size and type of damage.
2. A close-up at an angle. Move to one side and take another close-up at roughly 45 degrees. Light catching the panel at an angle shows the depth of scratches and the shape of dents far better than a straight-on shot.
3. A full panel shot. Step back and photograph the whole panel, or the whole corner of the car, so we can see exactly where the damage is.

A short video walking slowly past the damage is a great extra, especially for dents, because movement shows the shape of the panel clearly.

Tips for better photos

• Use daylight. Bright, even daylight gives the truest colours. Avoid dark garages and streetlight.
• Clean the area first. Dirt can hide damage, or look like damage that isn't there.
• Turn the flash off if it causes glare on the paint.
• Don't zoom digitally. Move closer instead, so the photo stays sharp.
• Show the scale. A coin or key held next to the damage helps us judge its size.
• Photograph every area you'd like repaired, even if some of it seems minor.

Useful details to include

• The make, model and year of the car
• The colour, and the paint code if you know where to find it
• Your area or postcode, so we can plan the visit
• When you'd ideally like the repair done
• Whether the car is a lease car due back soon
