Cloudy or yellow headlights are one of those problems that creep up slowly. One day you notice the car looks older than it should, or the lights don't seem as bright on dark country roads. The good news is that most cloudy headlights can be restored rather than replaced.
Why headlights go cloudy
Most modern headlight lenses are made from polycarbonate plastic rather than glass. It's light and tough, but it needs a protective coating to shield it from UV light. Over the years, sunlight, weather, road grit and harsh chemicals break down that coating. The plastic underneath then starts to oxidise, turning hazy, yellow and rough to the touch.
Why it matters
- Appearance: cloudy lights make a car look older and tired, which matters if you're selling or part-exchanging
- Light output: a hazy lens scatters and blocks light, so less reaches the road
- The MOT: the MOT inspection manual lists a headlamp lens that is "seriously defective" as a major defect, and testers consider light output when assessing damaged lamps
How headlight restoration works
- Mask and protect. The paintwork around the light is masked off.
- Remove the damaged layer. The oxidised surface is carefully sanded away, working through progressively finer grades until the lens is smooth.
- Polish. The lens is machine polished back to clarity.
- Protect. A new UV resistant protective coating is applied. This is the step that matters most for how long the result lasts.
Restoration vs replacement
Restoration works on the outside of the lens. It won't fix:
- Haze or condensation on the inside of the headlight unit
- A cracked or broken lens
- Faulty bulbs, LEDs or wiring
- Headlights that are incorrectly aimed

What about DIY kits?
DIY headlight kits can improve the look of mildly cloudy lights. The most common problem is that they remove the damaged layer but don't replace the UV protection properly, so the lens goes cloudy again quickly, sometimes within months. A professional restoration finishes with a durable protective coat.
